Solar PV (photovoltaic) grid-tied systems are the most common type of solar PV installation around the world. There are no batteries installed on these systems so there is no storage of energy.

Grid-Interactive Systems ​(Hybrid systems)

Grid-interactive PV systems give users more flexibility and increased reliability in deployments.

grid_interactive_solutionA grid-interactive system can be seen as a hybrid of a grid-tied system (with a battery bank as backup) and a grid-tied system (which uses the grid as backup).

The battery bank can typically be smaller than what is required in an off-grid system, sized to drive just the essential loads during a power-outage, with the grid as a reliable backup energy source for cloudy days.

Grid-interactive systems are often more affordable than off-grid systems and these systems are scalable, meaning you can start with a small, relatively inexpensive system and increase your power production over time by increasing the size of your system as you require or as your budget allows. These systems are very good medium- to long-term investments, shielding the system owner from the regular electricity increases.

Off-Grid Systems (battery back-up systems)

It is possible to install a solar system that is independent and not connected to the electrical grid at all – this is called an off-grid system.

It is advisable for an off-grid system to have a backup energy source. This backup source would typically be used during prolonged periods of bad weather, when the radiation from the sun is not sufficient to supply the load or charge the batteries, or both. These systems are ideal for areas where there is no electricity like rural areas, lodges and farms.
